Страдательный залог (The Passive Voice). Предлоги (The Prepositions). Функции и перевод it, one и that.

Universities in Great Britain

Students from any part of Great Britain and Northern Ireland can be admitted to any of the Universities.

Universities operate under royal charters and have complete academic freedom: they decide which students to admit, what, and how to teach, which degrees to award and on what conditions. All universities receive grants recommended by the University Grants Committee. There are thirty-six universities in England and Wales, eight in Scotland and two in Northern Ireland.

The University of London is by far the largest conventional university. It has some 40,500 full-time students. The Universities of Wales, Cambridge, Leeds and Manchester each has over 10,000 full-time students in the academic year.

Most undergraduates in Great Britain are taking courses of three years duration.

Universities are centres of research as well as teaching. Post-graduate students in Great Britain are doing research for higher degrees, usually doctorates.

Applications from prospective students for admission to first-degree courses at universities are submitted through the Universities' Central Council on Admission (UCCA). When completing an application, a candidate can list up to five universities or colleges, in order of preference. UCCA sends a copy to each of the universities, or colleges, the applicant has named. Each university selects its own students; the UCCA system does not interfere with this autonomy. Applicants for post-graduate studies apply directly to the university.

The college system at Oxford and Cambridge is unlike that of any other university, whether in Britain or America.

The university is like a federation of colleges. The university arranges courses, the lectures, and the examinations, and awards the degrees. No lectures are compulsory and tutors usually advise their students which lectures they should go to. Tutors are responsible for students' progress.

Each college has its own completely separate living quarters, its own dining hall and its own chapel. Cambridge has three women's colleges, Oxford — five. Today many of the men's colleges are coeducational.

At most universities an honours degree is taken in one main subject and one secondary subject. A general degree is taken in a variety of subjects, but carries less weight than an honours degree. If students pass their final exam, they get a degree marked First, Second or Third Class. Oxford offers a Fourth Class. Few students get First Class degrees, so these are a valuable qualification for a job. Students with any class of degree become Bachelors of Arts or Science. If they want to go a step further and become Master of Arts or Science, they have to write an original paper, or thesis, on some subject. Graduates who get degrees in engineering, technology, medicine, or maths are almost certain of getting a good job. But the majority of undergraduates still prefer arts subjects or the social sciences.

Notes to the text:

Royal charter – королевская хартия (закон); full-time student – студент дневного отделения; to submit – представлять на рассмотрение; tutor – руководитель группы студентов; honours degree – диплом с отличием.

Ecological Problems of Big Cities

Nowadays ecological problems have become one of the most important and the most urgent ones for the mankind. The pollution of the environment is one of the factors which determines the health of population. The pollution of air, water and soil results in the growth of general and occupational diseases, in the decrease of the work efficiency and other factors. That is why people are worried more and more about the environment.

Today industrial enterprises pollute the atmosphere with million tons of dust and other harmful emissions. Many cities suffer from smog. Automobile transport is one of the main sources of atmospheric pollution. The number of cars and lorries is growing all the time. Traffic in cities is getting worse and worse and it results in an increase of air pollution. In this respect Almaty is one of the most polluted cities in Kazakhstan.

There are over 150 super cities in the world with population from one to 15 million and more. Tokyo, New York, London, Mexico City, Rio de Janeiro and Moscow are just a few of the cities which have become super cities.

People in the super cities suffer from polluted environment: bad water, bad air and noise. A new term, urban climate, is used now for such cities. It means high temperature, oppressive atmosphere and intensive smog.

Some experts consider that it is practically impossible to protect the big cities from pollution. The World Health Organization (WHO) studied air pollution around the world for over eight years. It measured two things: the level of sulphur dioxide (S02) in the air and the level of smoke. Sulphur dioxide and smoke pollute water and have serious effect on forest, buildings and health of people.

In the WHO report it is shown that the cities with the most considerable level of C02 in the air are Milan, Teheran, Prague, Santiago and Sao Paulo.

Multimedia

Multimedia is any computer application that integrates text, graphics, animation, video, audio or other methods of communication. Multimedia is different from television, books or cassettes because it lets you interact with the application. You can click on a word to make a picture appear, or click on a picture to start a video.

Multimedia became more popular after the mid-1990s when the price of hardware began to fall. Then people started using it in industry, business, education, entertainment and for other purposes. Today, we can find multimedia at home, in school, at work, in public places, such as libraries, and on the Internet.

In business, advertisers use virtual reality in multimedia applications to advertise their products in three dimensions (3-D). Using multimedia for graphs and tables is now the best way for managers to present company results. In industry, pilots learn to fly using multimedia simulations of real situations, and scientists simulate experiments with dangerous chemicals in safety. Publishers are also producing interactive magazines, called e-zines, and e-books online.

In education, students study interactive CD-ROMs at their own speed and explore topics creatively by clicking on related links. Teenagers have played computer games for years, but many multimedia applications combine education and entertainment and they   let   them   visit   virtual   worlds   or   change   the   ending   of   films.

Electricity

It is impossible to imagine our civilization without electricity: economic and social progress will be turned to the past and our daily lives completely transformed.

Electrical power has become universal. Thousands of applications of electricity such as lighting, electrochemistry and electrometallurgy are longstanding and unquestionable.

With the appearance of the electrical motor, power cables replaced transmission shafts, gear wheels, belts and pulleys1 in the 19-th century workshops. And in the home a whole range of various time and labour saving appliances have become a part of our everyday lives.

Other devices are based on specific properties of electricity: electrostatics in the case of photocopying machine and electromagnetism in the case of radar and television. These applications have made electricity most widely used.

The first industrial application was in the silver workshops in Paris. The generator - a new compact source of electricity - was also developed there. The generator replaced the batteries and other devices that had been used before.

Electric lighting came into wide use at the end of the last century with the development of the electric lamp by Thomas Edison. Then the transformer was invented, the first electric lines and networks were set up, dynamos and induction motors3 were designed.

Since the beginning of the 20-th century the successful development of electricity has begun throughout the industrial world. The consumption of electricity has doubled every ten years.Today consumption of electricity per capita4 is an indicator of the state of development and economic health of a nation.

Electricity has replaced other sources of energy as it has been realized that it offers improved service, and reduced cost. One of the greatest advantages of electricity is that it is clean, easily-regulated and generates no by-products5. Applications of electricity now cover all fields of human activity from house washing machines to the latest laser devices. Electricity is the efficient source of some of the most recent technological advances such as the laser and electron beams.

Truly6 electricity provides mankind with the energy of the future.

Non-traditional Renewable Sources of Energy

It is known that much is being done in the world today for the development of non-traditional sources of energy. Without them the Earth cannot support its present population of 5 billion people and probably 8 billion people in the 21-st century.

Now we are using traditional power sources, that is, oil, natural gas, coal and water power with the consumption of more than 50 billion barrels per year. It is evident that these sources are not unlimited.

That is why it is so important to use such renewable sources of energy as the sun, wind, geothermal energy and others. Research is being carried out in these fields.

One of the most promising (перспективный) research is the development of power stations with direct transformation of solar energy into electricity on the basis of photoeffect. It was Russia that was the first in the world to develop and test a photoelectric battery of 32,000 volts and effective area of only 0.5 sq.m., which made it possible to concentrate solar radiation. This idea is now being intensively developed in many countries.

However, the efficiency of a solar power station is considerably reduced because of the limited time of its work during the year. But it is possible to improve the efficiency of solar power stations by developing different combinations of solar power stations and traditional ones – thermal, atomic and hydraulic.

That different wind energy plants are being developed is also well-known. These energy plants can be small (of several kilowatts) and large powerful systems.

It is important that all these advances in developing new sources of energy  will help to solve the energy problem as a whole, besides, they do not have negative effects on the environment.

Television

Hundreds of people were the first to see the black-white pictures on TV at the World's Fair in New York in 1939. The pictures were only transmitted from one side of the Fair territory to the other, but they were of great historical importance.

Within a few days the news of television spread all over the world. Many people wanted to look at the new invention. Everyone was interested in it. But only few people had TV-sets in the next few years. In 1958 there were millions of them.

In its short history television has had great influence on people’s life and way of thinking. People watched fewer films and turned from newspapers and magazines to TV. The boundaries of time and space have disappeared. People are able to see any concerts, football matches and competitions at the time they occur.

At present TV communication is provided with the help of system of artificial earth satellites so that people living in different parts of the country and in different time zones are able to watch the central TV programs at the most convenient hours.

Nowadays many people also have cable TV, a system using wires for the transmission of television programs (like telephone calls). Cable television was a big step forward in the TV development made by the mid -1980s. Scientists announced that many technical problems had been solved and in the future it would be possible via satellite and cable TV to use more channels on a TV set at every home in the world.

The next major advance for TV would be digital television. In a digital system the usual continuous signal is replaced by a digital code containing information on brightness, colour, etc.

By the end of 1980s television had moved to a new and most important stage in its development since the appearance of colour television. Technically it is called high-definition television (HDTV) or Hi-Vision. Japanese manufacturers developed a new video system with a picture resembling a wide-screen film more than traditional television. This is a television of the 21-st century and it will likely find its application not only in homes, but also in industry, medicine, even film production.

Types of Computer

A computer is a device that takes in data, processes it according to the program, and then outputs the processed data in some form. There is an increasing variety of computers of different sizes and designed for different purposes.

Computers can be divided into three broad categories:  mainframe computers (mainframes),  minicomputers (minis), and microcomputers (micros).

Mainframes are large, powerful, expensive computers that are operated by a team of professionals and are designed to be used by many people at the same time. The most powerful mainframes are sometimes called supercomputers. Minicomputers are really cut-down mainframes and are no longer very common.

The most common type of computer is the microcomputer. Microcomputers are sometimes called personal computers.  The abbreviation PC was originally used for microcomputers produced by IBM Corporation, but it is now sometimes used for other types of personal computer.  There is a wide variety of microcomputers but two common types are desktop computers and portables. Desktops are small enough to sit on an office desk and are relatively cheap. They are becoming cheaper and more powerful and are often used for running multimedia programs, i.e. programs that contain some combination of text, sound, high quality graphics, animation, and video. Multimedia computers need to have a sound facility and usually have a CD-ROM drive.

There is an increasing variety of portable micros that can be grouped according to their size. They can usually be powered from batteries and are useful in many different situations. They can also be powerful enough to be used for multimedia.

Sources of Power

The industrial progress of mankind is based on power: power for industrial plants, machines, heating and lighting systems, transport, communication. In fact, one can hardly find a sphere where power is not required.

The history of electrical power has been characterized by a steadily increasing rate of power consumption. In 1950 worldwide electrical power consumption was approximately one trillion kilowatt-hours, by 1990 it had climbed to twelve times that figure, nearly 12 trillion kilowatt-hours annually. During the same period, the world's population doubled from 2.6 to 5.4 billion. Today, annual worldwide electrical power consumption stands at 14 trillion kilowatt-hours; Germany accounts for 540 billion kilowatt-hours.

At present most of the power required is obtained mainly from two sources. One is from the burning of fossil fuels, i.e. (i.е. (лат. id est) =that is — то есть) coal, natural gas and oil. The second way of producing electricity is by means of generators that get their power from steam or water turbines. Electricity so produced then flows through transmission lines to houses, industrial plants, enterprises, etc.

It should be noted, however, that the generation of electricity by these conventional processes is highly uneconomic. Actually, only about 40 per cent of heat in the fuel is converted into electricity. Besides, the world resources of fossil fuels are not everlasting. On the other hand, the power produced by hydroelectric plants, even if increased many times, will be able to provide for only a small fraction of the power required in the near future. Therefore much effort and thought is being given to other means of generating electricity.

Is there an End to the Computer Race?

Today the word "electronics" is in general usage. There is a lot of various radio and TV sets and tape-recorders in our houses. In factories and plants we are surrounded with electronically controlled machines and instruments, we are carried by airplanes, ships, trains and cars with built-in electronic devices, and satellites circle the globe. In other words, we are living in an electronic world.

And the center of this world is a tiny silicon plate of a few square millimeters, an integrated circuit, or a chip, as it is more commonly known. The integrated circuit is undoubtedly one of the most sophisticated inventions of man, science and technology. It is in the heart of every electronic device and the more TV sets and computers we need, the more integrated circuits are required.

When we speak about a further development of computers we mean not only quantity, but also high technology and high speed. As the operation of an integrated circuit depends on microscopic "components", the purity of all materials and the cleanness at the plant they are produced at must be of the highest quality. A continuous search is going on in laboratories throughout the world for more perfect, reliable and high speed electronic circuits.

One of the most popular electronic devices is a computer. In the past it took scientists and researchers a whole lifetime to make a few thousand calculations, whereas for a modern computer this task is a matter of a few seconds. At present computers capable of performing billions of operations a second are required

In the next few years engineers will complete the work on computers of above one billion operations a second. It will take a few more years to produce a 10-billion operations computer. The fifth-generation computers performing 100 billion operations a second will become available in the nearest future. Is there an end to this race?

Made in Space

This label "Made in Space" for industrial materials will probably surprise no one in the not so distant future. They may include superconductors, new kinds of alloys, substances with peculiar magnetic properties,  supertransparent laser glass, polymers, plastics, and so on. Experts estimate that within a few coming years industrial production of various new materials of better quality will be started in space.

Conditions on board a space vehicle orbiting the Earth greatly differ from those on its surface. However, all of these conditions can be simulated on Earth, except for one - prolonged weightlessness. Weightlessness can be created on Earth, but only for a few seconds. A space flight is another matter: a satellite orbiting the Earth is n a dynamic zero-gravity state, i.e., when gravity is cancelled out by inertia.

What can weightlessness be used for? Many well-known processes go on differently due to the absence of weight. The Archimedes principle is no longer valid and, consequently, stable-state liquid mixtures can be obtained, the components of which would immediately separate on Earth because of different density.

In space there is no gravitational convection , i.e., movements of gases or liquids caused by difference of temperatures. It is well-known that various defects in semiconductors occur because of convection. Biochemists also have to deal with the worst aspects of convection, for example, in the production of superpure biologically active substances. Convection makes it very difficult on Earth.

A great number of experiments aimed at proving the advantages of the zero-gravity state for the production of certain materials have been carried out on board manned and unmanned space vehicles.  The experiments proved that many of the properties of the materials obtained under the zero-gravity condition were much better than those produced on Earth.

Crystals

Crystals are known to be the most perfect creation of the inorganic

world. They have long been attracting man's attention. The wide use of crystals explains the interest taken in them by physicists and chemists, mineralogists and biologists, metal experts and scientists in many other spheres.

We know crystal silicon batteries to collect solar energy out of space to feed various devices in man-made satellites. The wavelength of every radio station in the world is established by means of quartz crystals. The vast sphere of semiconductors is based on the crystals of germanium, silicon and others. These crystals are installed in tiny transistors and big electronic computers which perform millions of operations a second.

At present more than 1,000 artificial crystals are made in different parts of the world, these possessing properties unknown in nature. One of the latest achievements of Russian scientists was the production of artificial diamonds.

The creation of quantum generators ranks among the outstanding discoveries of recent times. A synthetic ruby, processed in the form of a rod, with a small addition of chromium oxide is used as the generator of light. Crystals are also used in quantum generators to guide the light beams.

Scientists of different countries are successfully developing quantum generators, called lasers, and are looking for new practical uses for this kind of rays. A laser beam is already being used in  metal-working industries, in the study of space, and medicine. But it is in the field of communications that the laser will find its most extensive application in the future. Scientists foresee the day when a single laser beam will be used to carry simultaneously a thousand million telephone conversations or a thousand television programmes. Transmission of sounds and pictures at the speed of light would be a revolutionary change that would solve the increasing demand for radio communication channels.

Transport for Tomorrow

One thing is certain about the public transport of the future: it must be more efficient than it is today. The time is coming when it will be quicker to fly across the Atlantic to New York than to travel from home to office. The two main problems are: what vehicle shall we use and how can we plan our use of it?

There are already some modern vehicles which are not yet in common use, but which may become a usual means of transport in the future. One of these might be an electric car.

A few decades ago, the only thing electronic on most automobiles was the radio. But at present sophisticated electronics is playing a big part in current automotive research. For example, in every gasoline-powered car that General Motors Corporation makes there is a small computer continuously monitoring the exhaust. The device, about the size of a pack of cigarettes, adjusts the vehicle carburetor fuel intake to get the best fuel economy. Ford cars are equipped with an electronic instrument panel that, among other things, will calculate how far one can drive on the fuel left in the tank. It will also estimate the time of arrival at destination and tell the driver what speed he has had since turning on the ignition.

According to specialists these features made possible by microelectronics are only the beginning. Recently a radar to be mounted on lorries and cars has been designed in the USA. Radar may control the brakes to avoid collisions, and a display screen may show the car's position on the road.

To produce advanced safety vehicles designers and engineers need not only highly developed electronics but new materials as well. A Japanese company is designing a car of a new generation. When completed, the new model will have a lot of unusual characteristics. The car's four-wheel control system will ensure movement diagonally and even sideways, like a crab, at right angles to the longitudinal axis. This is especially important when leaving the car in parking places.

A new ceramic engine has been developed in Japan. Many important parts such as pistons, pressure rings, valves piston rings and some others have been made of various ceramic materials, being in many respects better than those of steel. They withstand temperatures up to 1000 degrees C. Therefore, the engine does not need a cooling system.

Laser

Laser is one of the most sophisticated inventions of man. The name stands for light amplification by stimulated emission of radiation.

Laser produces an intensive beam of light of a very pure single colour. It represents the fulfilment of one of the mankind's oldest dreams of technology to provide a light beam intensive enough to vaporize the hardest and most heat-resistant materials. It can indeed make lead run like water, or, when focused, it can vaporize any substance on the earth. There is no material unamenable to laser treatment and laser will become one of the main technological tools quite soon.

The applications of laser in industry and science are so many and so varied as to suggest magic. Scientists in many countries are working at a very interesting problem: combining the two big technological discoveries of the second half of the 20th century — laser and thermonuclear reaction — to produce a practically limitless source of energy. There also exists an idea to use laser for solving the problem of controlled thermonuclear reaction. The laser beam must heat the fuel to the required temperature so quickly that the plasma does not have time to disintegrate. According to current estimates, the duration of the pulse has to be approximately a billionth of a second. The light capacity of this pulse would be dozens of times greater than the capacity of all the world's power plants. To meet such demands in practice, scientists and engineers must work hard as it is clear that a lot of difficulties are to be encountered on route.

The laser's most important potential may be its use in communications. The intensity of a laser can be rapidly changed to encode very complex signals. In principle, one laser beam vibrating a billion times faster than ordinary radio waves, could carry the radio, TV and telephone messages of the world simultaneously. In just a fraction of a second, for example, one laser beam could transmit the entire text of the Encyclopaedia Britannica.

Besides, there are projects to use lasers for long distance communication and for transmission of energy to space stations, to the surface of the Moon or to planets in the Solar system. These projects have not yet been put into effect, because of the great technological difficulties to be overcome and, therefore, the great cost involved. But there is no doubt that in time these projects will be realized and the laser beam will begin operating in outer space as well.

The immense possibilities of laser

The laser has become a multipurpose tool. It has caused a real revolution in technology and in the nature of productive labour. The laser has become indispensable as a means of space communication, its beam producing a sharp picture on the television screen. Moreover it can increase the size of the TV screen to that of a modem cinema. The laser cuts steel, drills holes into alloys and diamonds a few microns in diameter. The laser can do soldering and welding jobs and harden metals.

The laser is now being used in communication lines. Nevertheless, the laser no doubt has innumerable other applications which are still to be discovered. Specialists are now working at solving the major problems in the field of quantum electronics. Let’s take optical methods of data processing. Technological progress calls for ever more efficient electronic computer. Multipurpose computers capable of performing more than million operations per second have already been designed and built.

By improving the semiconductor integrated circuits scientists succeeded in obtaining a speed of 100 000 000 and more operations per second. Laser devices will apparently make it possible to build extremely fast computer elements capable of performing up to a thousand million operations per second. The speed of a computer’s operations depends not only on its elements directly engaged in carrying out logical operations but it also depends on the capacity and efficiency of its storages. The storage of a modern computer is complicated and bulky, its capacity being comparatively small. So far one cannot read data and out fast enough, record computation results instantly or charge the storage with sufficient information to make it possible for the computer to master a more complicated logic of "thinking" and this is where optics came in.

Optical Technology

One of the most interesting developments in telecommunication is the rapid progress of optical communication where optical fibres are replacing conventional telephone wires and cables. Just as digital technologies greatly improved the telephone system, optical communication promises a considerable increase in capacity, quality, performance and reliability of the global telecommunication network. New technologies such as optical fibers will increase the speed of telecommunication and provide new, specialized in-information service. Voice, computer data, even video images, will be increasingly integrated into a single digital communication network capable of processing and transmitting virtually any kind of information.

It is a result of combining two technologies: the laser, first demonstrated in 1960, and the fabrication 10 years later of ultra-thin silicon fibres which can serve as lightwave conductors. With the further development of very efficient lasers plus continually improved techniques to produce thin silica fibres of incredible transparency, optical systems can transmit pulses of light as far as 135 kilometers without the need for amplification or regeneration.

At present high-capacity optical transmission systems are being installed between many major US cities at a rapid rate. The system most widely used now operates at 147 megabits (thousand bits) per second and accommodates 6,000 circuits over a single pair of glass fibres (one for each direction of transmission). This system will soon be improved to operate at 1.7 gigabits (thousand million bits) per second and handle 24,000 telephone channels simultaneously.

Besides, it is reported that an optical equivalent of a transistor has been produced and intensive research on optical electronic computers is underway at a number of US companies as well as in countries around the world.

It is found that optical technology is cost-effective and versatile. It finds new applications every day — from connecting communication equipment or computers within the same building or room to long-distance transcontinental, transoceanic and space communications.

Modern Light-Wave Communications Technology

Some decades ago, the concept of using light pulses instead of electrical signals to transmit information was only that - a concept. Today, lightwave communications systems are among the most sophisticated transmission systems in the telecommunications network. They are at once efficient, versatile and relatively inexpensive to install and maintain.

The efficiency of lightwave systems is perhaps their most renowned quality. They carry enormous amounts of information over long distances at very high speeds. Consider, for example, the speed and capacity of the Bell System's long distance lightwave system. Light pulsing through a single, hair-thin glass fiber in this system can transmit the entire contents of Webster's unabridged dictionary - more than 2700 pages -over thousands of miles in only six seconds.

No less impressive than this tremendous speed and capacity is the versatility of light-wave systems. Because they are digital systems, they can transmit easily any of these types of information: voice signals, high-speed data signal, and television signals. Without undermining quality or efficiency, a single system can accommodate thousands of telephone conversations, and alternately handle data or video signals.

Finally, lightwave systems are inexpensive to install and operate compared to their wire-and-cable counterparts. Moreover, they allow considerable savings.

In addition, light wave systems eliminate certain equipment and operating costs. They are immune to electromagnetic interference, and therefore require no protection from it. Also, light can travel much farther through lightwave cables without regeneration than can electrons through copper carrier systems. This is because the light encounters little resistance from the very pure glass fibers through which it travels. Lightwave systems require significantly fewer signal regenerators than do electrical digital carrier systems: typically one every ten miles instead of one every mile.

lightwave communications system – система связи с использованием световых волн; their most renowned quality. hair-thin glass fiber – стекловолокно толщиной с человеческий волос;

high-speed data signal – высокоскоростной сигнал данных; carrier system – многоканальная система связи

Microelectronics and Miniaturizaton

As we know, transistors replaced electronic tubes due to their numerous advantages. One of the advantages of the transistor is its small dimensions. Because of their small size, the  absence of heating and other properties, transistors make it possible to produce compact, small-dimensioned electronic devices which consume very little power.

The intensive effort of electronics to increase the reliability and performance of its products, while reducing their size and cost, led to the results that hardly anyone could predict. The evolution of electronic technology is sometimes called a revolution: a quantitative change in technology gave rise to qualitative change in human capabilities. There appeared a new branch of science — microelectronics.

Microelectronics embraces electronics connected with the realization of electronic circuits, systems and subsystems from very small electronic devices. Microelectronics is a name for extremely small electronic components and circuit assemblies, made by film or semiconductor techniques. A microelectronic technology reduced transistors and other circuit elements to dimensions almost invisible to unaided eye. The point of this extraordinary miniaturization is to make circuits long-lasting, low in cost, and capable of performing electronic functions at extremely high speed. It is known that the speed of response depends on the size of transistor: the smaller the transistor, the faster it is. The smaller the computer, the faster it can work

One more advantage of microelectronics is that smaller devices consume less power.  In space satellites and spaceships this is a very important factor.

Computer Graphics

Computer graphics are known to be pictures and drawings produced by computers. A graphics program interprets the input provided by the user and transports it into images that can be displayed on the screen, printed on paper or transferred to microfilm. In the process the computer uses hundreds of mathematical formulas to convert the bits of data into precise shapes and colours. Graphics can be developed for a variety of uses including illustrations, architectural designs and detailed engineering drawings.

Mechanical engineering uses sophisticated programs for applications in computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM). In the car industry CAD software is used to develop, model and test car designs before the actual parts are made. This can save a lot of time and money.

Basically, computer graphics help users to understand complex information quickly by presenting it in more understandable and clearer visual forms. Electric engineers use computer graphics for designing circuits and in business it is possible to present information as graphics and diagrams. These are certain to be much more effective ways of communicating than lists of figures or long explanations.

Today, three-dimensional graphics along with colour and computer animation are supposed to be essential for graphic design, computer-aided engineering (CAE) and academic research. Computer animation is the process of creating objects and pictures which move across the screen; it is used by scientists and engineers to analyze problems. With appropriate software they can study the structure of objects and how it is affected by particular changes.

Superconductivity

Superconductors are likely to bring the mankind to the threshold of a new technological age. Prestige, economic and military benefits could well come to the nation that first will master this new field of physics. They were once thought to be physically impossible. But in 1911 superconductivity was discovered by a Dutch physicist K. Onnes, who was awarded the Nobel Prize in 1913 for his low-temperature research. He found the electrical resistivity of a mercury wire to disappear suddenly when cooled below a temperature of 4 Kelvin (-269 °C). Absolute zero is known to be 0 K. This discovery was a completely unexpected phenomenon. He also discovered that a superconducting material can be returned to the normal state either by passing a sufficiently large current through it or by applying a sufficiently strong magnetic field to it. But at that time there was no theory to explain this.

For almost 50 years after K. Onnes' discovery theorists were unable to develop a fundamental theory of superconductivity. In 1950 physicists Landau and Ginzburg made a great contribution to the development of superconductivity theory. They introduced a model which proved to be useful in understanding electromagnetic properties of superconductors. Finally, in 1957 a satisfactory theory was presented by American physicists, which won for them in 1972 the Nobel Prize in physics. Research in superconductors became especially active since a discovery made in 1986 by IBM scientists in Zurich. They found a metallic ceramic compound to become a superconductor at a temperature well above the previously achieved record of 23 K.

It was difficult to believe it. However, in 1987 American physicist Paul Chu informed about a much more sensational discovery: he and his colleagues produced superconductivity at an unbelievable before temperature 98 K in a special ceramic material. At once in all leading laboratories throughout the world superconductors of critical temperature 100 K and higher (that is, above the boiling temperature of liquid nitrogen) were obtained. Thus, potential technical uses of high temperature superconductivity seemed to be possible and practical.

The International Space Station

The International Space Station (ISS) is the most complex and expensive structure that has ever been launched and built in space. When completed, it will be a multi-room hotel and research facility orbiting the Earth every 90 minutes. By that time, resupply and assembly flight by shuttles or rockets will have become routine.

The Russians and Americans are partners in this international enterprise. The three-person multi-national crews will be alternately composed of two Americans and one Russian followed by a Russian majority. Later a six or seven-person crew will occupy the station. Some astronauts may stay on the ISS up to 187 days, but there are no plans yet for longer missions. The official life expectancy of the station itself is 10 years, but it should last much longer.

The fifth-generation station will be built by a partnership of 16 nations. It will consist of 36 modules and hundreds of individual elements that come from all over the world. Russia would supply and deliver 12 modules for the future station, each being a key module among its 36 ones. They are: the basic power module, the control, the life support, the service modules and others.

The station involves the most technologically advanced nations — Russia, the United States, Canada, Japan, Brazil, and 11 European nations. There will be many interconnected parts from so many countries that it would be impossible to predict how they would interact.

Hence, it is very important that all of these elements made by different suppliers should fit together properly and work exactly as planned. But even if all the parts fitted perfectly, the assembly process itself in orbit would be risky. The space station is flown while it is being constructed and each new building block added might change the way the station behaves in flight, which could result in serious trouble.

What is the purpose of the ISS? It is a political program as well as a science program. This program is no longer only about conducting scientific investigations in the absence of gravity, or about learning how to build a massive project weighing 400 tons in orbit, or about establishing the base for a future trip to Mars, The ISS is more than merely the next great adventure of the space age. It is also about promoting international cooperation and creating-thousands of peacetime jobs for highly skilled workers and engineers.

The implementation of the broad international program would require more than $40 billion. Some space experts would like to attract commercial users such as, e.g., biotechnology companies in order that the cost of the station should be lowered. And some specialists have even suggested that the station be used for advertising and Hollywood filmmaking.
